Ethnic minority individuals in the United States appear more likely to express psychological distress through bodily symptoms for 2 primary reasons:

1. There is a higher level of stigma associated with mental illness; therefore, physical symptoms are more socially acceptable

2. There is less of a distinction between mind and body among ethnic minorities

Misdiagnosis

Black Americans may use nonverbal communication (e.g. body language, supressed emotion) to express mental health concerns, and research suggests that non-verbal communication should be part of the assessment process with Black Americans.
